Rebates & concessions: Life Support rebates
With the introduction of full competition in the energy market on 1 January 2002, householders can choose the company(s) they want to buy their electricity and gas from.

These changes will also see the introduction of new energy concession arrangements to ensure the energy market is working as effectively as possible for customers.

Who is entitled to the life support rebates?

If you are already receiving a rebate from your electricity supplier for operating life support equipment, you will continue to receive the rebate without having to reapply.

If you require certain medical equipment in your home that is necessary to sustain your life (such as a kidney dialysis machine or respirator/ventilator) you may be entitled to a rebate on your electricity bill.

You will need to apply for the rebate from your electricity supplier and provide a certificate from your doctor confirming you require this equipment. The life support rebate is additional to any pensioner concession to which you may be entitled.

What if I choose a new electricity retailer?

You will need to apply for the life support rebate with your new electricity supplier and if you are eligible they will commence paying the rebate on your electricity bill from the time you change supplier.

How much is the rebate worth?

The amount of the rebate depends upon the type of machine you require. From 1 January 2002, the rebate will no longer be limited to 50% of the electricity bill but will be a flat rate for each type of machine. This means that some recipients will be better off, but none will be worse off.

Information on rates is available from your electricity supplier.

What happens if I live in a residential park?

Permanent residents of residential parks (caravan parks or mobile home estates) will also be entitled to receive the life support rebate from 1 January 2002.

If you are a permanent resident of a residential park and are supplied with electricity by the proprietor of the park, you should apply for the life support rebate to the standard retail supplier in the area you live. That supplier will pay the life support rebate to you directly.

If you are a direct customer of an electricity retailer, you should contact your retailer to apply for the rebate. If you change your retailer, you will need to apply for the rebate from your new supplier.

Want more information?

A free booklet explaining the choices available to you will be in your letterbox in early 2002. The booklet will contain information you will find useful if you decide to shop around for the best deal on your energy.
