The NSW Government has a voucher scheme in place to help customers who find themselves in temporary hardship to pay their electricity bills.
Under the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) Scheme, charitable organisations issue $30 vouchers to customers who are struggling to cover the cost of their power bills.
The customer needs to apply to one of the participating charities, which consider the claim and issue the customer with a voucher where appropriate.
The customer then forwards the EAPA voucher together with the balance of the electricity bill to the retail supplier, which deducts the value of the voucher from the account.
Charitable organisations participating in the scheme include The Smith Family, St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army.
At this stage, the scheme does not apply to gas bills.
