Your energy supply options |
You have three choices when it comes to choosing your energy supply.
Firstly, you can stay with your existing supplier on your current regulated terms and conditions.
Alternatively, you can remain with your existing supplier but negotiate a new contract with them.
Your third option is to change to a new supplier and negotiate a contract with them.
About contracts
There are two types of customer supply contracts: a standard form customer supply contract and
a negotiated customer supply contract.
You will have a standard form customer supply contract if you choose to stay with your existing supplier. This will be the case if you do nothing. Under the standard form contract, prices are regulated by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.
You will have a negotiated customer supply contract if you remain with your existing retail supplier but negotiate the price, services or terms and conditions, or if you elect to change to a new supplier.
For your protection, there are certain terms and conditions that must be included in both types of supply contracts. These terms and conditions cannot be removed from a negotiated contract.
Your supplier must tell you how the terms and conditions of a negotiated customer supply contract differ from the terms and conditions of a standard form customer supply contract.
Comparing quotes
You should be aware that the total price you agree to under a contract could include network costs, electricity or gas purchase costs, wholesale market 'pool' fees (in the case of electricity) and metering costs (if you choose to change your existing meter) and termination fees. You will need to take all these costs into account when working out the best deal.
Changing suppliers
If you have changed suppliers, you have the right to change back to the standard supplier who services your local area.
However, you should remember that you may be required to pay charges and satisfy other obligations if you terminate your contract before the end of its term.
