Metering: getting the right number
If you decide to change electricity or gas suppliers, you will need to know the unique meter number allocated to your premises.

This number - called a National Metering Identifier (NMI) for electricity or a Delivery Point Identifier (DPI) for gas - is printed on your electricity or gas bill.

The number will be used by your supplier of choice to identify your premises and to transfer your electricity or gas account.

You can also obtain your NMI or DPI by calling your distribution network service provider or supplier.

If you change premises you will be allocated a new NMI or DPI.

About your meter

You will not be required to change your meter to switch suppliers. However, in relation to electricity, you may have the option of installing an interval meter, which measures consumption in each half-hour period.

You may wish to install an interval meter if detailed information about electricity consumption is of benefit to you. For example, your supplier may offer to bill you using a time-of-use charge and it may be more economical to move your consumption to lower cost times.

Special metering requirements apply to customers in embedded networks, such as people who live in residential parks, who want to change their supplier.

Metering costs

If you do not change your meter, the cost of maintaining and reading the meter is the responsibility of your supplier.

If you choose to install an interval meter, the costs of that meter may be included in your contract. You should compare these costs against any savings that you may receive to determine if you are getting a better deal.

Additional costs of installing and operating the meter are the responsibility of your new supplier who may choose to pass these costs on to you. There may also be a termination charge to cover metering costs if the contract with your current supplier is terminated early.
