More than 1000 extra weekly services in new train timetable
17 September 2013
Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian has announced train customers will benefit from more than 1000 additional weekly services under the new train timetable starting 20 October.
There will also be 600 more express services each week compared to the current timetable, by making services faster.
"The new timetable makes the best possible use of our infrastructure and rolling stock and will deliver more services, new express services, and shorter travel times for many customers travelling longer distances," Ms Berejiklian said.
“There are also improved stopping patterns to reduce congestion and more consistent departure times, meaning customers at busier stations won’t need a timetable and platforms will be less crowded.
"The NSW Government has undertaken the biggest re-write of the train timetable in a generation with the aim of delivering benefits to as many customers as possible.
The new train timetable includes:
- More than 1000 additional services across the network every week.
- More than 600 new express services across the network every week compared to the current timetable, by making services faster.
- 230 extra peak services to and from the city each week (arriving 6am-10am and departing 3pm-7pm) including 100 extra peak services arriving in the city between 6am-9am and departing 4pm-6pm.
- More than 20,000 extra seats to the city every weekday morning.
- More than 690 extra weekly services for Western Sydney.
- A further 180 extra services each week running between Redfern and the City Circle providing additional capacity in the CBD – on top of the 1000 extra services network wide.
- Reduced journey times for customers travelling longer distances, including many on intercity services.
- More trains to and from Sydney Airport – 145 extra services a week.
- Improved frequency and connections for major hubs including Parramatta (430 extra services a week), Strathfield (305), North Sydney (226), Hurstville (154), Epping (135), Macquarie Park (104), Chatswood (96), Bankstown (63) and Penrith (34).
"This timetable has been developed by experts and built around our customer’s needs, taking into account all of the consultation undertaken as part of the Long Term Transport Master Plan," Ms Berejiklian said.
"For example, we know a lot of commuters are working longer hours, so service frequency for people heading out of the city has been extended later into the evening and similarly in the morning.
“In addition to increased peak service frequency, we have also improved the timetable for key educational, commercial and health precincts throughout the day."
Ms Berejiklian said the more than 1000 new train services a week introduced by the new timetable is in addition to the 107 extra weekly services introduced by the NSW Government since March 2011.

New Times will be available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play.
