Diggers ride free on Anzac Day

Public transport to and from Anzac Day services in NSW will be free for current and former members of the Australian Defence Force and their families, the NSW Government announced today.

All veterans and their spouses, children and grandchildren can ride free simply by wearing their uniform or displaying their medals.

Anzac Day services are a fundamental way for Australians to honour our brave service men and women - free public transport will make it easier for diggers and their families to attend.

The free travel is available on Wednesday 25 April on all CityRail, Sydney Ferries and Sydney metropolitan and outer metropolitan bus services.

Veterans and their families should wear their uniforms, display medals or carry official documentation from their local Returned and Services League branch in order to receive free travel.

This year, the War Widows Gold Card will also be an acceptable form of identification.

Return travel on CountryLink services within NSW can be purchased by veterans and their families for the price of a single ticket by providing official RSL documentation.

People should use public transport where possible to get to events on Anzac Day, as delays on the road are expected due to road closures in the city.

Special early morning bus and train services will run on Anzac Day so people can attend the 4.15am dawn service at Martin Place. In addition, motorists will not pay tolls on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or Sydney Harbour Tunnel from just past midnight until noon on Anzac Day.

CityRail is offering additional services to the public holiday timetable on most lines and customers are advised to catch one of the special CityRail services running to the city. Sydney Buses and Hillsbus will also operate special early morning services on major corridors to get people to the dawn service on time.

Taxi passengers on their way home from Anzac Day functions are encouraged to look out for secure ranks. These are patrolled by security guards and will operate in places including Coogee, Kings Cross, Parramatta, the Rocks, Sydney CBD, Wollongong and the Central Coast.
