Wollongong renewal projects

Housing affordability and availability is one of the biggest pressures facing the people of Wollongong at the moment, and part of the challenge is the lack of housing supply.

Homes NSW is reviewing its social housing portfolio across Wollongong to look for opportunities that can help address the housing crisis, by delivering more social, affordable and private market homes where they are needed most.

Homes NSW is currently investigating renewal opportunities in Gwynneville and Bellambi, and is working closely with Wollongong City Council, other government agencies, key stakeholders and the community to progress these investigations.

Through renewal, we can transform local housing supply as well as the infrastructure and services that support the needs of the Wollongong community as it grows over time.

Community feedback

The review of social housing follows our August 2023 survey in the Wollongong LGA. We asked social housing residents about their challenges and lived experience. They told us:

• safety (91%)
• access to public transport (75%)
• access to community facilities/services (74%)

were of key importance to them.

This community feedback has helped inform our early planning and renewal investigations. We will share any future rezoning or redevelopment plans with the local community for input.

Planning for any renewal projects is undertaken with a broad range of stakeholders and the community, including:

• social housing residents
• private landowners
• Wollongong City Council
• NSW Government agencies
• the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council
• local community organisations
• the community housing sector.
