Project at a glance
The Powerhouse Ultimo revitalisation will:
- Reveal original heritage features across the museum and honour the legacy of the Wran and Galleria buildings, retaining the shape and scale of the iconic structure.
- Connect the museum with the CBD and improve access to public transport.
- Deliver world-class exhibition spaces focused on the applied arts and sciences, and a major new public domain.
- Contribute to the growing night-time and visitor economies.
Powerhouse Ultimo will complement:
- Powerhouse Parramatta
- Powerhouse Castle Hill
- Sydney Observatory.
Project status
Infrastructure NSW is leading the design and delivery of the project with construction partner Richard Crookes Constructions. Main works commenced in March 2026.
Who is it for
Upon re-opening, the revitalised Powerhouse Ultimo will be a space for anyone curious about art, culture, applied science and design. It will be of major interest to locals, interstate visitors and international visitors.
