Continuing professional development requirements for certifiers
Learn about continuing professional development (CPD) requirements for building certifiers in NSW.
General CPD requirements for certifiers
Certifiers are required to complete continuing professional development (CPD) to stay up to date with industry developments, skills, knowledge, and legislation.
You can either complete a CPD program offered by a professional association or complete the requirements in the CPD guidelines.
Certifiers must complete:
- 25 CPD points each year (applies to all certifiers except swimming pool inspectors), and
- any mandatory CPD required by Building Commission NSW.
If your professional association's CPD program is less than 25 points you must make up the balance through activities given a points value under the CPD guidelines. The guidelines give different types of CPD activities different points value.
You can carry over up to 10 surplus CPD points to the following year (except swimming pool certifiers).
Once you are registered as a certifier, you will receive a letter outlining any further CPD requirements and when they need to be completed.
CPD requirements for swimming pool inspectors
Swimming pool inspectors must complete:
- 6 CPD points each year (from their second year of registration onwards), and
- any mandatory CPD required by Building Commission NSW.
This can include a mix of private learning, professional activities and approved CPD activities, as explained in the CPD guidelines.
Building surveyors who inspect swimming pools don't have to complete an extra 6 CPD points, but should include relevant activities.
Mandatory CPD requirements for certifiers
There are mandatory CPD courses for certifiers depending on their class of registration. Certifiers must complete the following CPD courses to renew their registration:
- Complying Development CPD - mandatory for all new certifiers in any of the building surveyor classes. It must be completed in the first year of registration.
- Updated Certifier Corruption Prevention CPD course on the Construct NSW platform - mandatory for all certifiers, in all classes of registration.
- Updated Certifier Practice Standard CPD course on the Construct NSW platform - mandatory for certifiers in building surveying classes of registration, and recommended for certifiers registered as building inspectors.
Requirement for newly registered certifiers:
- Complete all applicable CPD including the completion of relevant course/s within 12 months of registration.
Requirement for existing certifiers:
- Complete the relevant updated mandatory CPD course/s on Construct NSW platform prior to 30 June 2026.
