Licensing options for NSW producer/wholesalers
Do you operate under more than one producer/wholesaler liquor licence?
Depending where your licences are located, there may be opportunities to streamline your licensing arrangements and create greater flexibility for future growth.
Multiple premises under a single licence
Eligible producer/wholesalers may be able to operate multiple premises under one producer/wholesaler licence, subject to location requirements.
Wine producers may be eligible where premises:
- are located within the same wine region (as defined in the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation Act 1980) or
- are within 20km of each other if not located in a recognised wine region.
Beer, spirit, cider, perry and mead producers may be eligible where:
- all premises are operated by the same licensee, and
- premises are within:
- 10km of each other in metropolitan NSW, or
- 20km of each other in regional NSW.
Consolidating multiple sites under one licence may provide greater operational flexibility and support future expansion.
Streamlining different licences at the same premises
If you currently hold multiple liquor licences at the same venue, for example, a producer/wholesaler licence alongside an on-premises licence, there may be an opportunity to consolidate your licensing arrangements.
In some circumstances, businesses can:
- extend the boundary of an existing producer/wholesaler licence, and
- apply for or update an existing drink on-premises authorisation (DOPA) (PDF 380.81KB).
A DOPA allows alcohol consumption across a broader range of business activities and areas, including:
- cellar doors
- restaurants
- accommodation facilities
- event and function spaces.
Don't forget local council approvals
Where applicable, relevant local council development approval (DA) must support any changes and the proposed use of the premises. Operators should ensure approvals are current and consistent with their licensing arrangements.
