If a liquor licence application has been made in your area or a venue wants to change how it operates or extend its trading hours, you can have your say.
When an application is lodged, the community and stakeholders such as New South Wales Police and your local council must be notified. The range of notification required will depend on the type of application. Applications that will have a higher impact on their local community, such as extended trading hours, bottle shops and hotels will need to consult a larger radius of their local community as well as local Aboriginal health and community services. Once an application is lodged, it is published on the liquor and gaming application noticeboard. This is a public website where you can view all current liquor and gaming applications in New South Wales. Applications are usually listed for 30 days. During this time, anyone can make a submission in support of or against the proposal. To make a submission, visit the notice board, find the application you're interested in, and click make a submission. You'll be asked to provide your name, email, and address. You can choose not to share your details with the applicant. Your submission should focus on how the proposal might affect the community. You might want to comment on the venue's trading hours, size, or location.
For example, is it close to a school, hospital, or place of worship.
You can strengthen your submission by including relevant data such as census figures, local crime statistics, or health information. These are available from a range of public websites.
Avoid including issues that fall under council responsibility like rubbish, traffic, parking, or lack of public transport as these generally won't be considered. Once the submission period closes, the applicant will receive all submissions and is then given the opportunity to respond or amend their application. The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority or its delegates will consider everything before making a decision.
