Tow truck assessments
Find out how to get Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme (HVAIS) establishment of registration inspection report if you own a tow truck.
Tow trucks in NSW need to get a HVAIS establishment of registration inspection report, also referred to as a 'brown slip'.
Tow trucks must:
- comply with the provisions of ADR 44 where applicable, and
- be certified to show compliance with Section T of Vehicle Standards Bulletin 6 as published by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
Licensing tow trucks
For the purpose of registration, a tow truck is a vehicle:
- used to tow vehicles
- that has an apparatus to lift a vehicle partially off the ground and maintains the vehicle in such a position while towing.
Tow trucks licensed by NSW Fair Trading must undergo a HVAIS inspection by the NHVR annually for renewal of their registration. Licensed tow trucks will display a distinctive 'TT' or 'TTT' number plate.
