School graduation ceremonies

Resources and guidance on how to complete a COVID-19 Safety Plan for a school graduation ceremony.

How many people are allowed

Full details are provided in the physical distancing section of the COVID-19 Safety Plan.

Event Maximum capacity summary
School graduation ceremony

Ensure capacity in the venue does not exceed one person per 2 square metres of floor space, excluding any staff hired to facilitate the event such as photographers or venue employees. Ceremonies may need to be held in sessions if capacity is difficult to manage or there is a large student cohort.

In Greater Sydney, indoor areas must not exceed one participant per 4 square metres of publicly accessible space.

Note: ‘Greater Sydney’ means Greater Sydney as defined by the Public Health (COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement) Order (No 7) 2020.

COVID-19 Safety Plans

We’ve developed this COVID-19 Safety Plan to help create a safe environment for conducting school graduation ceremonies.

There are additional industry-specific COVID-19 Safety Plans available on the NSW Government website which may also be useful when planning your school graduation ceremony. This document should also be used in conjunction with the policies and procedures relevant to each education sector.

On 24 September, NSW announced that formals and graduation ceremonies for primary school students could proceed in Term 4. Secondary schools should wait until after the last written exam for the 2020 HSC, Wednesday 11 November, to hold these events to minimise any potential disruption to exam preparation and conduct.

Keep your plan up to date

You may need to update the plan in the future, as restrictions and advice changes.

Your COVID-19 Safety Plan

You can either:

  • use the provided COVID-19 Safety Plan to address the checklist of matters for Year 12 graduation ceremonies
  • keep using your existing plan, if you have one, after making sure it includes all the items in the provided COVID-19 Safety Plan.
