Aboriginal Affairs NSW recognises the diversity of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who live, work and play on the traditional homelands of the Greater Sydney region. We pay our respects to the Elders of these lands as the Traditional Owners of Country and we acknowledge the continuing connection to land, waterways, sky and community of all Aboriginal people here today.
Aboriginal Affairs’ Greater Sydney regional office is based in Mascot, on the traditional land of the Kameygal.
Greater Sydney has played a central role in the continuing history of Aboriginal resistance, rights, and advocacy. Stony Creek was a key gathering place where Aboriginal people from across the continent came together to organise in early colonial periods. These movements led to the first Day of Mourning and helped build the foundations of Aboriginal community-controlled organisations across the nation.
The Greater Sydney Region is the birthplace of Australia's key Aboriginal organisations, including the first Aboriginal Medical Service, Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Housing Company and Aboriginal Children's Service.
Today, our region remains one of the most diverse Aboriginal regions in NSW. Greater Sydney is home to five local Aboriginal land councils that deliver health services, housing, land and asset management, land and sea ranger programs, cultural heritage advocacy and protection, family and child support services, homework centres and many other services for members and the broader community.
In addition, the Greater Sydney Team support and collaborate with over 100 Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation's (ACCO's) across the Greater Sydney Region who are paramount to service delivery, self-determination and advocacy.
