Discover who we are and learn about what we do
The Registry was formed in 1856 to register life events in NSW. The Registry delivers a wide range of services and products such as certificates and conducting weddings.
Who we are
The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages is an agency within the NSW Department of Customer Service. It exists to enact the Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1995 and the Relationships Register Act 2010.
What we do
Register life events
We register life events in NSW accurately and securely. This includes births, deaths, marriages and relationships and official changes of name and sex. We keep these records forever, for the benefit of the community.
Create certificates
Once a life event is registered, we issue certificates which are used as important identity documents. We also create commemorative certificates used as a decorative keepsake for births and marriages.
Conduct ceremonies
We conduct Registry weddings, help with vow renewals, and organise unique ceremonies.
Help you research your family history
If you're trying to piece together your family tree or find a long lost relative we can give you access to some of the Registry’s historic records to help you do so.
Provide critical information
We supply data for planning and research to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Help communities
We assist communities with diverse needs. We also regularly visit communities across NSW, helping the vulnerable, the homeless and those in financial distress to use our services.
