A birth certificate can only be issued after the child's birth is registered. If you're unsure about registration, submit the birth certificate application and the Registry will notify you if registration is needed.

Commonly asked questions

What email address should I use for the application

You can only use your DCJ work email address to apply. Application updates, including the tax invoice and your unique Online Reference Number (ORN), will be sent to this email.

Do paper applications receive a tax invoice

Only apply with a paper application if you cannot apply online. Paper applications take longer to process as the Registry needs to enter details manually.

If you submit a paper application, you will not receive a tax invoice unless you request one separately.

Do I need to be a DCJ casework practitioner to submit an application or registration

You must be a DCJ casework practitioner to register the birth of a child in the Minister’s parental responsibility. To order a birth certificate, you must be a DCJ casework practitioner.

If you are a non-government casework practitioner with case responsibility (but are not delegated parental responsibility), contact your local DCJ Child and Family District Unit (CFDU).

How do I check the status of my application

You can view application processing times on our website.

You can also check the status of an online application with the Online Reference Number (ORN). The ORN is sent to you by email after you submit the online application.

How do I get urgent birth registration support from the Registry

If you have an urgent enquiry relating to a birth registration, email BDM-Birthsupport@customerservice.nsw.gov.au. Use the subject line ‘Urgent casework enquiry - [subject’s full name]’.

We recommend that you do not call Service NSW for any enquiries. The phone line is only for members of the public.
