Building Commission NSW visits Queanbeyan to connect with community, industry, skills sector and local government
Building Commission NSW will be in Queanbeyan from 15 to 17 September to connect with locals, the construction industry, skills sector and local government, as part of its commitment to engage with regional communities and lift building standards across the state.
The three-day regional visit will see the NSW Building Commissioner James Sherrard and Building Commission NSW staff host drop-in sessions, tour the local TAFE NSW campus, meet with local councils and conduct a range of inspections at sites across Queanbeyan and the surrounding areas.
The drop-in sessions will give residents a chance to seek advice from Building Commission experts on licensing, education and building issues, as well as lodge complaints face to face.
The drop-in sessions will be held outside the Queanbeyan Service NSW Centre from 3pm-5pm on the 15 September, 11.30am–1.30pm on the 16 September and 9.30am-11.30am on the 17 September.
The NSW Building Commissioner will also visit the TAFE NSW Queanbeyan campus to tour its Brick and Block Workshop, view the Skills for Education and Employment Program (Try a Trade) in action and meet local civil construction students.
As the state pushes towards meeting Housing Accord Targets, the NSW Government has invested $4.72 million into making it easier for certifiers to stay in, and new certifiers to enter, the industry.
During the visit, Building Commission NSW will meet with certifiers from Queanbeyan-Palerang, Snowy Monaro, Bega Valley, Yass Valley, Goulburn and Eurobodalla councils, to discuss certification practices, regional challenges, and what support they need to meet demand.
The Queanbeyan-Palerang region has a healthy construction industry, with Building Commission NSW data showing the region has around 400 active sites and more than 2,700 licence holders.
To ensure building standards are being maintained, inspectors will conduct site visits in Queanbeyan and surrounding areas, with a focus on identifying building quality, safety and compliance issues.
So far this year, Building Commission NSW has inspected hundreds of sites across regional NSW, including in the Central West, Far West, Mid North Coast, New England and Riverina regions.
Queanbeyan Service Centre is located at the corner of Aurora Ave and Aurora Pl, Queanbeyan East.
The Skills for Education and Employment Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
Quotes attributable to NSW Building Commissioner, James Sherrard:
“This visit to the Queanbeyan-Palerang region is all about connecting with the people who are building their community, one brick, frame, slab, pipe and wire at a time.
“We’re in town to hear about their experiences, share our knowledge, support and work with the people of Queanbeyan to ensure building quality is upheld at every stage.
“While we’re meeting with a range of industry, local government and skills sector stakeholders, we also want to hear from residents, who are encouraged to pay us a visit at our drop-in sessions.
“Regional communities deserve the same amount of attention our capital city gets and we’re in town to demonstrate that strong oversight isn’t just a city-based effort—it’s a statewide responsibility.”
