Marrying Love and Luck Proves Popular for Registry Weddings
The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages has taken centre stage on a date considered to be the luckiest day of the year.
The number eight is highly regarded in Chinese culture and is associated with prosperity, abundance and wealth, making 8 August a fortunate date to get married.
Since 2023, bookings for ceremonies on this date have increased by 150 per cent, with capacity reached for the first time in seven years.
The highly sought-after date saw 24 couples begin their married lives with symbolic significance and positive momentum yesterday.
More than 60 per cent of Registry wedding customers are born overseas, and symbolic dates like 8/8 provide a meaningful way to celebrate love while honouring cultural beliefs.
Recent Registry data shows an upward trend in couples requesting dates that align with cultural, religious or numerological significance, including Lunar New Year, double-digit dates and numerology favourites like 2/2 and 11/11.
To mark the occasion, the Pyrmont rooms were styled in shades of lush red and pink floral, colours traditionally associated with love, luck and joy in many Asian cultures.
There are still spots available for couples seeking a touch of mood and mystery this Halloween, 31 October, and bookings for Valentine’s Day 2026 at the Sydney Opera House and Pyrmont Registry are now open.
