Riverina residents to be further protected through ID Support assistance
Community members in the Riverina region will be equipped with the knowledge on how to best protect their identity thanks to the nation-leading ID Support NSW team which is visiting the region from 23 to 25 September.
ID Support NSW is at the Henty Machinery Field Days with team members available to help locals learn how to protect themselves online, including what makes a strong password, how multi-factor authentication works, tips on identifying scams, as well providing advice on what to do if their identity is ever compromised.
People are encouraged to learn about the risks associated with identity theft and how documents can be replaced such as a driver licence, photo card or birth certificate if they are stolen or fraudulently obtained.
Community cybersecurity and privacy training to build digital literacy skills and help keep people safe online is a key pillar of the NSW Digital Inclusion Strategy, which is designed to address the challenges faced by vulnerable and disadvantaged communities when interacting online.
Consultation on the strategy revealed more than 80 per cent of respondents had experienced online scams, privacy breaches or harassment, with at-risk groups disproportionally affected. These sessions will ensure tailored advice and recommendations can be provided to at risk members of the community.
More than 67,000 scams were reported in NSW last year worth more than $115 million with scammers mostly using emails and text messages, according ScamWatch.
In the 2024-2025 financial year alone, ID Support NSW attended more than 160 community events, providing expert privacy and security advice to over 59,000 attendees, this includes the team’s recent appearance at the Norco Primex Field Days in Casino which had 18,000 attendees over three days.
