Venues urged to prioritise student safety during O-Week 2025
As university students prepare for Orientation Week (O-Week), licensed venues are reminded of their obligation to uphold responsible service practices and ensure events comply with liquor laws.
Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) is urging bars, pubs, clubs, licensed vessels and other licensed venues to adhere to liquor promotion guidelines, enforce age ID checks, and make sure measures are in place to minimise alcohol-related harm during this busy period.
Dimitri Argeres, A/Executive Director of Regulatory Operations at L&GNSW, emphasised the important role venues play in fostering a safe celebration for young adults.
“O-Week is an exciting milestone for students, and licensed venues are key to ensuring these celebrations are both safe and enjoyable,” Mr Argeres said.
“Venues considering running games or drink promotions must comply with the rules to prevent risky behaviour such as binge drinking.”
During O-Week, L&GNSW inspectors will conduct compliance checks at licensed premises hosting student events and will monitor promotions on venues' websites and social media channels.
"Following the rules isn’t just a legal requirement for licensed venues - it’s essential for keeping young adults and staff safe," Mr. Argeres said.
“L&GNSW provides guidance and resources to help venues align promotions with regulations, support responsible practices, and ensure O-Week remains a well-managed and positive experience for everyone.”
