Dr Felix Chan data breach
In May 2023, IT systems operated by Dr Felix Chan were subject to a cyber-attack. These systems stored patient care records.
While this cyber security incident has not impacted NSW Government systems, ID Support NSW is notifying patients on behalf of Dr Chan.
What should I do right now?
You need to be aware that scammers may try to capitalise on this incident.
Scammers may claim to be from NSW Government agencies, including NSW Health.
You should stay alert for fraudulent emails, letters, phone calls and SMS messages.
We’ve outlined some precautions you can take to protect yourself online.
Change your passwords for online services such as banking. Never use the same password for multiple accounts and services.
Change the secret questions and answers that you use to verify yourself online. Never use the same secret questions and answers for multiple accounts and services.
Make sure your email account has a strong password that you don’t use for other accounts. If it isn’t strong, you should change it now.
Implement multi-factor authentication on digital services where available, such as having an additional code sent to your phone by SMS before you can log into your account.
Install anti-virus software on all your devices and keep it updated.
Apply all recommended software patches from operating systems and software providers.
Don’t open messages or click links if you don’t know the sender or if you’re not expecting the message.
Background
In May 2023, Dr Chan became aware that IT systems attached to his practice had been impacted by a cyber security incident.
In response, Dr Chan took immediate action to safeguard patients and contain the incident by engaging external cyber security experts and working with the NSW Government, including ID Support NSW.
Following the incident, Dr Chan became aware patient information stolen by cybercriminals had been published on the dark web.
What has been done
Since the incident, Dr Chan has engaged cyber security specialists to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that his practice’s systems are secure, reducing the likelihood of such an incident occurring in the future.
