Designed to equip landholders with practical tools and strategies to secure water supplies, these workshops will feature insights from experienced producers like Shane Laverty, who have firsthand experience managing the challenges of drought.
Shane Laverty, a Senior Natural Resource Management Advisor with Local Land Services and a local prime lamb producer from Crookwell, recalls the impact of the 2017-2019 drought.
“It became very evident during that period that we needed to place more emphasis on upgrading our water infrastructure, Shane said.
“We dealt with dry dams, poor water quality, and failing systems, which increased the workload and stress on our family.
During the drought, Shane and his family began cleaning and enlarging dams, upgrading to durable concrete troughs, and installing additional header tanks to improve water reliability. They’ve since developed a comprehensive plan that includes water budgeting, financial allocations, and regular maintenance to ensure resilience against future droughts.
At the workshops, Local Land Services Senior Agriculture Advisor Matt Lieschke will join Shane to guide participants in developing tailored farm water management plans. Topics covered will include:
- understanding water requirements for stock and domestic use
- exploring water sources such as dams, bores, and streams
- assessing dam storage potential in relation to harvestable rights.
