“Preparation is key when it comes to managing livestock during floods and your animals are your responsibility,” said Nathan Jennings, Senior Land Services Officer with North Coast Local Land Services.
“By taking the time to plan now, landholders can safeguard their animals and reduce stress during an emergency.
“Having a designated high ground area that can accommodate all your livestock is essential.
“Make sure the area is clear of debris and accessible, even in heavy rain.”
For horse owners, separate stables or portable yards on high ground are recommended. It is also vital to identify alternative locations where livestock or horses can be moved if needed.
“We encourage landholders to have backup sites and agreements with landowners in case relocation is necessary.
This is especially important in areas prone to prolonged flooding,” Nathan said.
In addition to providing a safe location, ensuring access to food and water is critical.
"Make sure your high ground has a fresh water supply for your livestock," said Nathan. "You'll also need access to sufficient fodder on hand and have it stored on-site in case of isolation."
Familiarity with the designated safe zone is equally important.
“Animals should be comfortable with their high ground or stable area and we recommend having your animals get used to the area beforehand to reduce stress and panic in the event of a flood.”
Also ensure the high ground offers shade and wind protection. “It's not just about flood safety, but also about protecting animals from the elements once they are relocated,” Nathan said.
By planning ahead and designating a safe area for livestock and horses, animal owners can minimise the risks associated with floods, protect their animals and resume business sooner after the waters recede.
