Key information
As part of the Good Neighbours Program, Western Local Land Services will provide on-ground resources and support to control the spread of invasive cacti and help protect the Living Desert State Park.
Project background
Jumping cholla (Cylindropuntia fulgida) is a rapidly spreading cactus shrub affecting public and private land around and within the Living Desert State Park.
The barbed spines on this invasive cactus can injure people and animals.
Project delivery
The Jumping Cholla Control project will begin in 2025.
Western Local Land Services will help private and public landholders to control the cactus by:
- supporting local contractors with on-ground weed control
- targeted treatment of sentinel cacti with cochineal to maximise impact
- holding community engagement and awareness activities
- providing training and initial chemicals to landholders for ongoing activity.
Funding and partnerships
Partners working alongside Local Land Services include:
- Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development
- NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services
- Western Landcare NSW
- Local Control Authorities
- public and private land managers.
The Jumping Cholla Control project is funded by the Good Neighbours Program as part of the NSW Government’s $10 million commitment to strengthening biosecurity in NSW.
