Coffs business a screening success story
Whether you’re trying to beat the Aussie mozzies or need a breeze to beat the heat when summer comes, a Coffs Harbour company is leading the way with screening solutions thanks to $120,000 from the NSW Government.
Ossie O Screens received funding to help buy a new Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine which automates the manufacturing process by controlling machinery from a computer.
The new equipment has allowed the Coffs Harbour business to manufacture its product locally from start to finish, eliminating outsourcing and increasing screen production.
Company co-owner and manager Simon Shipman said the funding boost has help Ossie O meet booming customer demand.
“We were seeing our customers looking for innovative screening solutions to suit outdoor lifestyles and modern building styles,” Mr Shipman said.
“People want to make the most of the natural environment and are looking for ways to embrace energy efficiency with natural breezes, without being stuck with old fashioned screen doors.”
During COVID the company faced challenges, with several key components made in China and unable to be delivered to Australia. The new machinery means those parts are now made locally, reducing vulnerability in supply chains.
Ossie O is going from strength to strength with their product now sold in all states and territories, as well as Asia, and won the Coffs Harbour Business of the Year Award for 2024.
Mr Shipman said the factory expansion has seen Ossie O take on six additional employees with a focus on employing locals.
“Ossie O aims to be an employer of choice and believe that by employing locals you are helping a community to grow and as local residents ourselves that’s really important to us,” Mr Shipman said.
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Executive Director Harriet Whyte said the company’s expansion is a real local success story.
“The Coffs Coast is beautiful, but we all know warm weather can bring unwanted house guests and Ossie O have developed a product line that has just been embraced in this part of regional NSW and now right across Australia and the world,” Ms Whyte said.
“The funding has let the company take considered risks that are now delivering sustainable business growth, as well as jobs growth for the Coffs Coast.”
