Far West LHD clinicians published in an international journal
Two clinicians at Broken Hill Health Service have had an academic paper about high blood sugar levels in an emergency presentation, published in an international journal.
Far West Local Health District’s Clinical Nurse Consultant Emergency and Critical Care Kahlia Liston and Nurse Unit Manager Emergency Department Georgia Bartley are the primary authors of the work which will feature in the Journal of Emergency Nursing.
Ms Liston said having their work published is a fantastic achievement.
“It was a profoundly proud professional accomplishment and especially as the work was undertaken in the Far West,” Ms Liston said.
“To me, this means we are considered emerging emergency nursing researchers and means the Far West Local Health District is producing globally acknowledged emergency research.”

The Journal of Emergency Nursing is the official peer reviewed journal of the Emergency Nurses Association and is published only six times a year. It is distributed to emergency nurses, and emergency and trauma departments around the world.
The paper is about emergency nursing care for a patient with a serum blood glucose of 2394mg/Dl, and informs the management of extreme hyperglycaemia in diabetic ketoacidosis in this setting
The paper discusses the highest peer-reviewed global blood glucose finding and demonstrates the remarkable capability of rural emergency departments during urgent’ event.
Ms Liston and Ms Bartley recently presented the paper at the Critical Care in the Vineyards Conference, where it won Best Free Paper – Judges Choice and People’s Choice. The prize of $1,000 which will go towards the next stage of research.
The paper is open access and can be read online in the Journal of Emergency Nursing.
