National Palliative Care Week
Far West Local Health District is encouraging people to discuss their end-of-life health care wishes during National Palliative Care Week (10-16 May 2026).
This year’s theme, "Getting to the Heart of It: Big Questions. Real Answers", focuses on raising palliative care awareness and encouraging people to discuss their end-of-life health care wishes.
A Palliative Care awareness and information stall for community and staff will be held in the Broken Hill Hospital foyer on Wednesday, 13 May from 9am-2pm. Information on Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning will be available.
Far West LHD Director of Cancer and Palliative Care Services, Melissa Cumming said National Palliative Care Week opens the door for tough discussions.
“Conversations around palliative and end-of-life care are often avoided because they can feel confronting and many people aren’t sure what palliative care is or when it can help.
“National Palliative Care Week is a chance to change the stigma by encouraging earlier conversations and connecting people to trusted information and support. Allowing people to plan care that is personal, safe and respectful of people’s end of life plans,” Melissa Cumming said.
Palliative care is more crucial than ever due to Australia’s growing older population. Palliative care can also offer anyone with a life-limiting illness, including children and young people, improved quality of life and comfort.
