Unfortunately, one in two people will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, however, there is no need to face diagnosis and treatment alone.
Peer support groups give people the chance to meet and talk with people who have been through or are going through similar experiences.
FWLHD Cancer Care Coordinator Sandra Turley said the group aims to provide patients and their families with information that will assist them to navigate through the complexities of their cancer diagnosis.
“Support groups provide patients and their families with a safe environment to discuss any concerns they have around treatment, side effects, emotional, physical or financial concerns associated with their diagnosis,” Ms Turley said.
“Support group facilitators are available in real time to address any concerns that arise. They also provide support for families, as cancer can bring immense challenges to everyone.
“Talking about cancer can help reduce the burden, you may find new ways to manage treatment, or you may meet new people who understand what you are going through.”
Studies show that support groups can enhance participants’ self-esteem, improve their relationships, and reduce depression and anxiety.
FWLHD Psychologist Jean Houlahan said the support group will be driven by the patients’ needs.
“It will not be a generic model, it will consider the individual needs of its members. We will have guest speakers at times, and we are looking at incorporating some breathing and relaxation techniques to assist with issues of insomnia,” Ms Houlahan said.
