The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Wollondilly Shire Council to name a reserve in Wilton as Marianna Park.
The proposed name is for a reserve located at 20 Greenway Parade, Wilton, Wollondilly Local Government Area.
The proposed name Marianna commemorates the Farrell family homestead in Wilton, which operated as a nursing practice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Recommended by the Picton Historical Society, it honours the contributions of Mary Ann and Edith Farrell, who served the local community as nurses and midwives.
Mary Ann (1863-1944) was the district's only nurse for many years, while Edith (1882-1963) later gained formal registration after training as St Margaret's Hospital.
The name acknowledges their significant role in healthcare and community support across the Wollondilly Shire.
GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name and suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to:
The Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 26 October 2025.
Quotes to be attributed to NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood:

"Community consultation on the proposed name is an important step to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback and ensures that each voice has a chance to contribute."
"Place names are a powerful way to preserve our cultural heritage by honouring individuals whose contributions have shaped our communities."
