Have your say on a place name in Wollondilly LGA
The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Wollondilly Shire Council to name a reserve in Thirlmere as Peter Fenning Park.
The reserve is located at 60 & 62 Brundah Road, Thirlmere, in Wollondilly Local Government Area.
The proposed name seeks to commemorate Peter Fenning (9/07/1949-30/09/2023) for his significant contribution to the Wollondilly Shire.
Peter Fenning dedicated 43 years of service to the Buxton Rural Fire Brigade and the Wollondilly community.
Serving as Captain for two terms, most recently from 2010 to 2022, and later as Deputy Captain, Peter's leadership was instrumental during some of Australia's most challenging times, including the 2019-2020 fire season.
Throughout his time with the RFS, Peter was a vocal advocate for an inclusive brigade, welcoming new members of all ages, ability, ethnicity and gender.
Beyond his operational role, Peter was a mentor, a friend, and a trusted presence in the community.
He championed training, community engagement, and the values of service, always offering his time and wisdom to those in need. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Peter was named joint 2023 Wollondilly Citizen of the Year.
GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name and suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to:
The Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 10 May 2026.
