Have your say on place names in Byron LGA
The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Byron Shire Council to formalise the names New Brighton Beach, South Golden Beach and Wooyung Beach, and to discontinue the name Crabbes CreekBeach. All beaches are located within the Byron Local Government Area (LGA).
New Brighton Beach is proposed for a beach extending approximately 3.8 km along the shoreline of New Brighton, from the northern breakwall of the Brunswick River to South Golden Beach. The beach takes its name from the suburb in which it is located.
South Golden Beach is proposed for a beach extending approximately 1.9 km from New Brighton Beach to the Ocean Shores - Wooyung suburb boundary. The beach takes its name from the suburb in which it is located.
Wooyung Beach is proposed for a beach extending approximately 1 km from the Ocean Shores-Wooyung suburb boundary to the Byron Shire - Tweed Shire LGA boundary. The beach takes its name from the suburb in which it is located.
The proposal also seeks to discontinue the name Crabbes Creek Beach, which was assigned in 1971 to a beach extending approximately 4 km north of the New Brighton Beach. The proposed extent of Wooyung Beach would replace the current extent of Crabbes Creek Beach, aligning the beach name with the suburb name.
The proposal changes aim to address anomalies in the naming and extent of beaches within the Byron LGA. Formalising the names will ensure all maps have the correct name and that they are used consistently on maps and in datasets.
GNB is seeking feedback from the community to verify that the proposed names and locations are accurate. Suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website under Current Proposals
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to:
The Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 25 October 2026.
Quotes to be attributed to NSW Surveyor-General Thomas Grinter:
"The Geographical Names Board is committed to formalising established names that are in use by the local community."
"Ensuring consistent and accurate place names is essential for clear communication and avoiding confusion which can arise from alternative names being used for features."
