Access pathway for Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit
Soon, young people aged 12 to 17 years old will be able access a new purpose-built Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit at Nepean Hospital. The project is currently under construction and is on track for completion at the end of the year.
Designed for, and in consultation with, young people and their families, the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit will offer short stay care for those experiencing significant mental health issues.
It is intended for young people who would benefit from a structured setting where they can receive tailored mental health care and support by experienced mental health practitioners.
State-wide referrals to the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit will be made through community-based health and service providers.
Director of Mental Health for Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, Matt Russell, said the service is designed to help young people to get the help they need to stay well in their everyday lives.
“This unit provides a high level of specialist care to young people and families with significant mental health problems —providing a safe, supportive and purpose-built space for young people who need help to recover,” Mr Russell said.

The new unit will include 10-bedrooms with ensuites shared living areas, therapeutic programs, and spaces for learning and recreation, creating a supportive environment that prioritises recovery. Staff will work closely with each young person and their family to develop a recovery plan that supports a smooth transition back to everyday life.
Fixtures, Fittings and Equipment Manager, Tracey De Villecourt said the environment has been thoughtfully created to feel welcoming and appropriate for adolescents.
“Every detail in the unit — from the furniture and lighting to the colours and materials — has been chosen to make the space feel more home-like and non-clinical.
“We wanted to create an environment that feels familiar and comfortable, where young people can relax and focus on getting the support they need to return to their everyday lives feeling more confident and more secure,” Ms De Villecourt said.

The unit, which will be officially known as the Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit when it opens, will strengthen the network of youth focused mental health supports across the Nepean Blue Mountains region.
The NSW Government is delivering the Adolescent Mental Health unit at Nepean Hospital as part of the $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program to support the delivery of mental health care reform in NSW.
A public open day will be held prior to opening to give the general public an opportunity to preview the new facility.
Construction is on track for completion in late 2025 and the service will open following an operational commissioning period.
