Acute Services Building opens to patients at Prince of Wales Hospital
The new 13-storey Acute Services Building is the first major upgrade to the hospital in 25 years.
Minister for Health Ryan Park, Member for Coogee Dr Marjorie O'Neill, and Health Infrastructure Chief Executive Rebecca Wark joined Prince of Wales (PoW) Hospital staff to celebrate the official opening of the new Acute Services Building (ASB) at the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct.
The new building marks a significant chapter in the hospital's 160-year history and is the first major upgrade to the hospital in 25 years. It provides new and enhanced treatment spaces including an expanded Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
It's the centrepiece of the health, research and education facilities within Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct, which are working together to rapidly translate research and healthcare innovations into bedside care. Designed with input from health service staff and consumers to meet the healthcare needs of the community, it includes:
- new and expanded adult Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit
- new and expanded Central Sterilizing Services Department
- new and expanded Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre
- new Community Assessment Unit
- new Community Management Centre
- replacement of existing inpatient wards
- provision of additional inpatient beds
The project will also provide contemporary facilities for the following specialties:
- Haematology and Oncology
- Aged Care (Acute and Rehabilitation)
- Orthopaedics Respiratory and Infectious Diseases
- a Clinical Neurosciences floor that incorporates an expanded Acute Stroke Unit, Neurology and Neurosurgical beds
- Complex Epilepsy Service Future research, education and training spaces, including additional spaces funded by UNSW Sydney to enable clinical innovation and research, biomedical engineering, and clinical translational research laboratories co-located directly alongside clinical staff providing acute healthcare services.
Ongoing works within the building will see additional inpatient units along with new digital operating theatres equipped with the latest technology.
A new rooftop helipad will be operational on completion of the adjacent Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre.
