Additional beds fast-tracked for Blacktown Hospital
Communities across Western Sydney are set to benefit from the addition of 30 beds at Blacktown Hospital sooner, with the project fast tracked to late 2026, a year ahead of schedule.
The milestone will boost acute inpatient capacity and provide greater support for patients, staff and the growing Western Sydney community.
The bed expansion project is part of the Government’s $120 million investment to upgrade Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals, which will deliver a total of 60 additional beds across both facilities.
At Blacktown, the project will include new patient rooms as well as expanded clinical and non-clinical support service spaces.
The hospital’s busy Emergency Department currently sees more than 64,000 patients annually, with the number of urgent triage category 2 presentations having doubled since 2015.
The additional beds will help to ease pressure across the hospital by improving patient flow, supporting emergency care, and strengthening the capacity of staff to deliver safe, high-quality care.
A building contractor for the works is expected to be appointed in the coming months. Construction will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption, with hospital services remaining operational throughout the redevelopment.
Planning for additional beds at Mount Druitt Hospital is also progressing, which will increase medical and surgical capacity.
The Blacktown and Mount Druitt bed expansion is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District.
The $120 million investment is part of the NSW Government’s broader program to deliver new and expanded health services across Western Sydney, supported by the 2025–26 NSW Budget. This includes:
- an additional $700 million for the new Bankstown Hospital, increasing the total investment to $2 billion
- Additional State funding of $90 million to provide the full range of maternity and birthing services as part of the new Rouse Hill Hospital, with a further $120 million announced by the Commonwealth Government towards new the Rouse Hill Hospital development;
- $492 million to develop a Statewide Pathology Hub on the Westmead campus;
- $40.1 million to fit out level 13 of the new Paediatric Services Building at Westmead in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.
$22.3 million to establish a new paediatric hospice at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Other projects are progressing across the region, including upgrades at Nepean, Liverpool, Canterbury, Fairfield, Camden and Campbelltown hospitals.
