A new and upgraded Medical Ambulatory Care (MAC) Unit is now open at Wollongong Hospital, providing enhanced care to support outpatients following surgery and other conditions.
The new facility is part of the NSW Government’s $21.9 million investment to upgrade services at Wollongong Hospital to better respond to the health needs of the growing local community.
As part of the upgrade, the MAC Unit has been relocated to enable the expansion of the transit lounge and is helping to support increased demand in hospital services by improving the flow of patients and providing more timely access to beds.
Transit lounges provide a safe area for medically stable patients to wait prior to being discharged, transferred to another facility, or for an inpatient bed to become available. They help improve patient flow by freeing up acute care beds while ensuring patients receive necessary care and support during their transition.
An additional MRI, CT scanner and supporting infrastructure are also being delivered and are anticipated to be completed in 2026.
In addition to the $21.9 million upgrade works, the NSW Government is investing a further $220 million for the future expansion and redevelopment of Wollongong Hospital and the Wollongong Health Precinct, announced as part of this year’s State Budget. Early planning for this project is underway.
