A collection of new artworks will feature in the Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIPU) and upgraded Emergency Department (ED) at the Broken Hill Health Service, bringing colour, culture and connection into the new spaces.
Developed to support positive and healing experiences for patients and consumers, the artworks will contribute to welcoming and culturally safe environments across both facilities.
The arts program for the Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment centres on the theme Songlines and Storytelling, depicting the diverse stories of the Broken Hill region.
Local artists Clinton Kemp, Joshua DeGruchy and Amanda Johnson were commissioned to create original works following an Expression of Interest process, while additional artworks and photography by local artists Adam Edwards, Wendy Martin, Jackson Schorn, Tannya Quayle, Dirk Romeyn and Brian Harris will also feature throughout the facilities.
A work by Wilyakali artist Clinton Kemp will be reproduced and featured on the large external façade at the MHIPU’s entry, while a collection of original artworks reflecting the colours and distinctive landscape of the region will be displayed in bedrooms, consult rooms and common areas.
The internal MHIPU artworks are now in place, with the large external artwork to be installed before the unit is completed and operational, which is expected before the end of 2025.
The new eight-bed facility has been funded through the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program and will support the delivery of contemporary mental health services in the Broken Hill region.
The upgraded ED will also feature a range of new artworks, including a display of Clinton Kemp’s Journey (after rain) in the waiting room. The paediatric bay will showcase a large, colourful wall graphic by Amanda Johnson, designed with young people in mind and featuring vibrant colours and local animals within the familiar Broken Hill landscape. Additional works will be installed in the reception, interview room and two new consult rooms.
