Broken Hill Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit open
The new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (AMHIPU) in Broken Hill is now open, providing access to modern, purpose-built mental health facilities for the Far West community.
NSW Minister for Mental Health Rose Jackson officially opened the new facility, delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure program.
The new unit brings a much-needed expansion of services to the region, and will provide welcoming, comfortable, safe and supportive facilities.
Featuring eight single inpatient rooms with dedicated ensuite bathrooms, as well as a communal lounge and dining area, the unit also includes a sensory modulation room as well as a multi-activity and exercise space.
Patients also have access to a partially covered outdoor courtyard, designed to enhance natural light and provide fresh air throughout the facility. Landscaping has been influenced by Aboriginal culture and connection to the land, with local artwork carefully selected to contribute to a healing environment.
Located on the Broken Hill Health Service campus, the new unit will enable access to improved health, assessment times and individualised care plan options.
The AMHIPU was delivered alongside the $12 million upgrade to the Broken Hill Health Service Emergency Department, with the final stage of works expected to be completed by end of the year.
The Broken Hill AMHIPU was delivered in partnership with Far Western Local Health District and building contractor Barpa.
