Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment works notification - Impacts to Hospital campus
Impacts to Broken Hill Hospital campus due to redevelopment from Monday 1 July 2024.
About the works
Health Infrastructure is building a new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit and refurbishing the Emergency Department at Broken Hill Hospital to better meet the health needs of the Broken Hill community now and into the future.
Health Infrastructure has engaged Barpa Construction Services to carry out this work, with construction to start shortly. Site set up and occupation will take place from Monday 1 July 2024, with the following impacts to staff, patients and visitors to the Broken Hill Hospital campus.
How the work will affect you
We understand that building new infrastructure can disrupt consumers, visitors, staff, nearby residents, businesses and road users. We prioritise the health and safety of the local community in all construction activities.
From 7am, Monday 1 July 2024 until end of construction of Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIPU).
Changed traffic conditions affecting vehicles and pedestrians
The Thomas Street entry will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians for the construction of the Acute MHIPU site and related works. Vehicles can enter the hospital campus only via Chloride Street. Detours and signs will be in place. For your safety, please follow all instructions.
Parking
From 7am on Monday 1 July 2024, a large section of the western car parks accessed via the Thomas Street entry, along with the adjacent paddock overflow parking, will be unavailable due to the construction of the Acute MHIPU. The paddock will be permanently closed for parking as it will become the site of the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit. The total number of parking spaces will not be reduced and offset parking will be available once construction is completed in late 2025.
Bus stop
The hospital bus stop near the rear entrance will be affected by the temporary road closure. From Monday 1 July, the bus will pick up and drop off passengers at the front of the hospital on Thomas Street until construction of the Acute MHIPU is complete.
Note
- The fire egress route will remain open at all times.
- The needle exchange facility will stay accessible.
- Services and rubbish removal at the Self Advocacy Resource Unit (SARU) building will continue via Thomas Street.
- Vehicles can access the Safe Haven Café, the adjacent Far West Mental Health Recovery Centre, and hospital residences through the existing laneway from Thomas Street.
