Community tours new Mental Health Inpatient Unit in Broken Hill
More than 100 people recently toured the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Broken Hill Health Service, offering a first-look inside the modern and therapeutic spaces, ahead of its opening later this year.
Expected to open later this year, the new unit brings a much-needed expansion of services to the area. It has been designed in consultation with clinicians, community representatives and people with lived experience of mental illness, ensuring the spaces reflect both clinical needs and cultural connection.
Delivered under the NSW Government’s $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program (SWMHIP), the new MHIPU includes:
- all single inpatient rooms with dedicated ensuites
- access to a large internal communal lounge and dining area
- a sensory modulation room
- a multi-activity space
- an exercise room
- access to a large and partially covered external courtyard
- a dedicated entry away from the main hospital with a designated drop-off zone.
The facility also features artwork and landscaping which draw inspiration from Aboriginal culture and the surrounding landscape, creating a welcoming environment that promotes healing and wellbeing.
It is one of the Broken Hill Health Service Redevelopment projects being delivered in partnership between Health Infrastructure and Far West Local Health District. The redevelopment also includes the delivery of the upgraded Emergency Department which is currently in the third and final stage of construction.
