Construction begins on new Supportive and Palliative Care Unit at Westmead Hospital
Construction is underway on a new inpatient Supportive and Palliative Care Unit at Westmead Hospital, marking an important step forward in improving access to end-of-life care for Western Sydney communities.
The purpose-built 15 bed unit facility will provide a warm, home-like environment for patients, families and carers offering comfort, dignity and specialised support during some of life’s most challenging moments.
The project is being delivered under the NSW Government’s $93 million World Class End of Life Care program.
The unit has been designed in consultation with clinicians, community, Aboriginal, multicultural and multi-faith representatives to ensure it meets the diverse needs of patients and their families.
Features include private rooms with ensuites and outdoor access, as well as dedicated areas for reflection and connection.
Located on Level 5 of the Central Acute Services Building, the new facility will be conveniently located to other health services at Westmead Hospital and also complement existing supportive and palliative care services at Auburn and Mount Druitt hospitals.
Once complete, the new unit will strengthen access to specialist end-of-life care across the Western Sydney Local Health District and deliver a compassionate, patient-centred environment within one of the state’s busiest tertiary hospitals.
The World Class End of Life Care program is delivering new or redeveloped palliative care facilities across NSW, including at Wyong, Nepean, Tamworth and Orange hospitals, in addition to Westmead.
The project is being delivered by Health Infrastructure and Western Sydney Local Health District, with Interior Construction Group engaged as the construction contractor.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.
