Construction reaches highest point for NSW’s largest mental health facility
Construction of the new $540 million mental health facility at Westmead has reached its highest point, with a topping out ceremony marking a major milestone in the delivery of NSW’s largest mental health facility.
The facility, which will be known as the Westmead Centre for Mental Health will deliver a purpose-built 10-storey building, designed to support integrated, contemporary mental health care to help meet growing demand across Western Sydney.
The new facility will bring together mental health services, integrating with the broader Westmead Health Precinct and connecting to Westmead Hospital.
It will include:
- acute mental health beds for youth, adolescents, adults, older persons and people living with eating disorders
- mental health intensive care and high dependency units
- mental health assessment area
- sub and non-acute mental health beds
- multidisciplinary ambulatory and outpatient services.
The facility will feature a new link bridge that will connect staff and visitors to Westmead Hospital’s main building and strengthen integration between mental health care and general health care services and facilities, including the Emergency Department.
The project is supporting hundreds of jobs during construction, with approximately 440 workers currently on site each day. This is expected to increase to 500 workers during peak construction.
Construction including concrete pours and services installation will progress over the coming months.
Main works construction remains on track for completion in 2027.
When complete, existing mental health inpatient and outpatient services currently located at Cumberland Hospital will relocate to the new facility. These services will continue to operate until the project is completed.
Planning for transition into the new facility is underway, with hundreds of staff and consumers participating in change and operational familiarisation activities, to building understanding of the facility’s layout, rooms and designs while construction continues.
The facility is being delivered in partnership with Western Sydney Local Health District, with Richard Crookes Constructions engaged as the main works contractor.
