Construction starts on new Shellharbour Hospital
Main works start on the new Shellharbour Hospital, set to transform healthcare with expanded services and support 800 direct construction jobs.
Health Infrastructure Acting Chief Executive Emma Skulander joined Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park and Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson on site to mark the start of main works construction.
The purpose-built facility will transform healthcare delivery, offering a range of health services tailored to the needs of the Illawarra community, to provide accessible and high-quality care closer to home.
The new hospital is being delivered as part of the more than $780 million new Shellharbour Hospital and Integrated Services project. The project is jointly funded by the NSW and Australian Governments and includes:
- an expanded emergency department
- increased surgical capacity
- rehabilitation services
- aged care services
- acute medical services
- mental health services
- renal dialysis
- outpatients care services
- car parking and improved public transport links.
The new hospital is also being designed to enable construction of a future rooftop helipad.
BESIX Watpac was appointed main works contractor earlier this year, following a competitive tender process.
The project is expected to support around 800 direct jobs during construction, with the potential to support thousands of indirect jobs over the life of the project. Construction is expected to be complete in 2027.
