Construction underway for Paediatric Services Building at Westmead
Stage 2 of The Children's Hospital at Westmead Redevelopment is one step closer with construction underway for the new 14-storey Paediatric Services Building.
The milestone has been marked with a sod turning ceremony on site at Westmead. The capacity of almost every service will be expanded in the Paediatric Services Building.
When complete, it will provide critical paediatric services in one space, including:
- intensive care
- neonatal intensive care
- surgical services
- medical services
- cancer care.
The new facility's design has been informed by feedback from patients, families, staff and the community.
The co-design process has led to improved amenities including family-friendly single-patient rooms featuring a dedicated space for parents or carers to rest and sleep during their child's stay in hospital.
Greater access to surrounding green space, improved retail offerings and accessible playgrounds have also been incorporated into the design.
The redevelopment also includes a new multi-storey car park, a revitalised forecourt, play areas, an Aboriginal Meeting Place and refurbishment of some areas of the existing hospital.
The new Paediatric Services Building will be co-located with the new children's emergency department which was delivered as part of Stage 1 of the redevelopment.
Roberts Co was awarded the contract to build Stage 2 of the redevelopment, which is expected to be completed in 2025. The services within the Paediatric Services Building also include:
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Paediatric Intensive Care Unit
- cancer services
- operating theatres
- cardiac catheterisation
- interventional laboratories
- pharmacy inpatient units.
The project will provide a major boost to the local economy in Western Sydney supporting an estimated 1,100 direct jobs, with the potential for supporting thousands of indirect jobs over the life of the project.
