Construction workers share what keeps them grounded for R U OK? Day
The Westmead Centre for Mental Health is set to be the largest purpose built mental health facility in NSW. This R U OK? Day, we spoke to our project team about the positive mental health practices that keep them grounded.
R U OK? Day is a reminder to check in with mates, recognise when someone may be struggling and keep conversations about mental health and wellbeing going.
Health Infrastructure and Richard Crookes Constructions (RCC) invited the project team on the Westmead Centre for Mental Health site to share what keeps them grounded and mentally healthy.
From spending time with family to playing music, sport and pursuing hobbies, team members reflected on the everyday actions that help support their wellbeing.
Take a look at some of their responses below.
RCC also held a toolbox talk on site on R U OK? Day, which focused on mental health, peer support and encouraging people to seek help when they may be struggling.
For Gerhard Nelson, Safety Manager on the Westmead Centre for Mental Health with RCC, these conversations are part of a year-round focus on supporting workers' wellbeing.
"We try to keep wellbeing front of mind throughout the year,” he says. “A lot of the time, that starts with a quick chat on site and checking in with people. We also have a reward and recognition program open for anyone to recognise a team member’s efforts.”
"One of the most popular activities we've run is our 'Reasons to Stay Safe' wall. Workers add photos, drawings and messages about the people and things that matter most to them. We get a lot of kids' drawings, which are always a great reminder of why we do what we do.”
"We want to build a culture where people can connect with each other, feel supported and know they're not alone."
Through activities like these, Health Infrastructure and RCC are helping keep conversations about mental health and wellbeing part of everyday life on site, while delivering a facility that will support future mental health consumers, families and staff.
