Hi, my name is Matt. I'm the station officer of Moruya Ambulance Station and I'm an intensive care paramedic and extended care paramedic. I enjoy being a paramedic through the variety of works that it produces.
Every day is a different day. We'll do a lot of different parts of work from traumas to medical we meet interesting people, go see interesting places.
Which areas of the Eurobodalla do you cover?
As a paramedic and the station officer. I get to cover all the towns around the area. We're not limited by geographical boundaries. We might go to Bateman's Bay or Durras. We do jobs down in Narooma or Bega. It's normally the closest resource to a job. So we're dispatched based on where our current location is and where our patients are.
How do you work with other teams across the Eurobodalla?
We work as one big team across the Eurobodalla, we work especially with Batemans Bay and Narooma. They're in the same command as where we are in Moruya. We often attend training sessions with them and we often support each other's crews on big jobs. Also backups and clinical assistance. We have all the equipment and training with us in the ambulance, to ensure that patients get the best pre-hospital care prior to arriving at the Emergency Department. If we turn off at a critical incident where there are multiple patients or someone's critically unwell, paramedics are highly trained at triaging and ensuring that there's appropriate resources. We can call in aeromedical resources like the helicopters. They come with doctors to assist in treating patients. We can also contact our virtual clinical care centre and speak to emergency consultants to give us advice on appropriate treatment pathways. They can also take advice where to best transport patients, whether it be one of the local hospitals or if I need to go to a tertiary centre such as Canberra.
What 3 pieces of advice would you give to someone in a medical emergency?
My 3 useful features of life advice to anyone in a medical emergency would be firstly to stay calm and then call 000. Follow the advice of our call takers. Triple 000 calls are received by the call taker and get triage based on clinical need and the urgency of the patient presenting.
What’s the best thing about living and working in Eurobodalla?
The best thing about working in the Eurobodalla is the opportunities it provides. It’s a great place to work. There's great people down here. It's a great place to raise a family and a great place for everyone to grow up.
