Final artists announced for Shoalhaven Hospital Redevelopment
The Shoalhaven Hospital Redevelopment has reached an exciting milestone, with four additional Australian artists selected to contribute major artworks for the new $440 million Acute Services Building.
Glenn Barkley, Antonia Pesenti, Claire Foxton and Nastia Gladushchenko will join previously announced artists Kirli Saunders OAM and Lara Merrett to deliver a diverse suite of integrated artworks throughout public spaces, the Paediatric treatment areas and the new Mental Health Unit.
Artworks Supporting Healing and Connection
The Arts in Health program continues to be shaped by community and staff feedback, ensuring each artwork contributes to environments that support recovery, wellbeing and connection.
Key highlights include:
- Skiesful/Treesful: A sandstone garden sculpture by Glenn Barkley, using Shoalhaven sourced materials and created in collaboration with BirdLife Shoalhaven and Aboriginal Cultural Arts students from Bomaderry TAFE. This outdoor space is designed to offer rest, reflection and connection with nature.
- Paediatric treatment room designs: Antonia Pesenti has created vibrant, imaginative artworks inspired by local landscapes and wildlife to transform young people’s treatment spaces.
- 23 metre entrance mural: Claire Foxton and Nastia Gladushchenko are developing a striking large scale mural to welcome staff, patients and visitors at the Shoalhaven Street hospital entry.
These pieces complement works already underway by Kirli Saunders OAM and Lara Merrett, completing the full artist cohort for the redevelopment.
A Creative Future for Healthcare
The integration of art throughout the new hospital reflects growing evidence that creative environments can support physical and mental wellbeing. The artworks have been commissioned in consultation with local stakeholders and guided by the Shoalhaven Redevelopment Arts Working Group.
Construction of the new Acute Services Building remains on track for completion later this year, with the artists working alongside the project team to finalise designs ahead of installation.
