First look inside The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s new building
The community is being given a look inside the new state-of the art paediatric facilities at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, with construction of the $659.1 million Stage 2 Redevelopment now complete.
Minister for Health, The Hon Ryan Park joined health staff on a tour of the new building, which features a major expansion of intensive care facilities and specialist health services for children.
The redevelopment is due to open to patients in the coming months and will deliver new and enhanced critical care and acute healthcare services, continuing the delivery of world-class care for children and families across NSW.
The new 14-storey building includes -
- A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit spanning two floors
- Expanded cancer services including a new day oncology treatment centre and inpatient units
- A new perioperative unit with operating theatres, cardiac catheterisation labs and interventional laboratory
- New facilities for a state-wide service for burns, offering inpatient and outpatient facilities
- A pharmacy and oncology pharmacy, equipped with a robot to streamline the delivery of medication
- A new Surgical Short Stay Unit
In addition, funding from the NSW Government and philanthropic support from the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation is enabling the fit-out of an inpatient unit of the new building, providing dedicated care for children and their families living with chronic and complex medical conditions.
The new building features inpatient units with single-patient bedrooms, each with a carer bed and private ensuite as well as design elements such as natural light, calming interiors, patient entertainment devices and integrated technology.
The redevelopment was designed in consultation with staff, patients and families to create a welcoming, home-like and healing environment that supports comfort, wellbeing and family connection throughout treatment.
Final preparations are underway to ensure staff are ready to welcome patients and their families in the coming months.
The project has been delivered by Health Infrastructure, in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, and building contractor Roberts Co., with significant philanthropic contributions from the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.
