First major concrete pour marks milestone for NSW’s largest mental health facility at Westmead
Construction of the new $540 million Integrated Mental Health Complex at the Westmead Health Precinct has reached a significant milestone, with the first major concrete pour now complete.
The concrete will form the foundation for the new state-of-the-art health facility, marking the next phase of construction as the building takes shape.
The Integrated Mental Health Complex will be the largest mental health facility in NSW, delivering high-quality, contemporary care and support in purpose-built therapeutic environments.
Approximately 1,300 cubic metres of concrete will be used in this first stage to support the ground floor, which will be delivered to the site by 220 concrete trucks. In total, more than 122,000 cubic metres of concrete, equivalent to 48 Olympic sized swimming pools, will be poured over the life of the project.
This milestone marks the first of five major concrete pours that will take place over the coming months for the 10-storey building.
Work is progressing well on site, with two 120-metre-high tower cranes installed on site to support construction, now prominent landmarks at the Westmead Health Precinct.
The purpose-built facility will be connected to Westmead Hospital, enhancing integration between mental health and other clinical services and facilities.
The facility will include:
- Acute mental health beds, with beds for youth, adolescents, adults, older persons and people living with eating disorders
- Mental health intensive care and high dependency units
- Sub and non-acute mental health beds
- Multidisciplinary ambulatory and outpatient services.
The Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex will support almost 1,000 direct jobs with the potential for supporting thousands of indirect jobs throughout the life of the project.
Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in 2027.
