Foundations being laid for the Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment
Almost one year since construction began, the Cessnock Hospital Redevelopment is taking shape, with significant work underway to set the foundations for the new acute services building.
The NSW Government is investing $138 million in redevelopment, which will deliver modern facilities designed to meet the health needs of the Cessnock community.
Excavation works at the site are well progressed, and the concrete footings for the building’s foundation have been installed. Concrete has started to be poured for the ground floor concrete slab, which is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, creating the footprint of the new building.
Almost 4,500 cubic metres of concrete will be used to construct the new building - nearly enough to fill two Olympic size swimming pools.
The new two-storey building will include:
- an expanded emergency department
- new operating theatres and day surgery spaces
- two new inpatient wards
- a sterilising services unit
- a new medical imaging service
- a pharmacy.
Due for completion in 2027, the redevelopment will improve the experience of patients, families and staff, and ensure the community can continue to access high quality care close to home, while providing staff with a modern working environment.
Construction is expected to support around 250 direct jobs, with the potential to support hundreds of indirect jobs over the life of the project.
All hospital services continue to operate throughout construction.
