Green light for the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Project Northeast Building
Construction has started on the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Northeast Building, following planning approval for the first phase of the project.
The new two-storey building is the first building to be delivered as part of the NSW, Victorian and Australian Government’s $558 million funding for the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Project, one of the largest regional health projects currently underway in NSW and Victoria.
The start of construction follows planning approval and an assessment of the Review of Environmental Factors, which was placed on public exhibition earlier this year. Albury-based building contractor Hansen Yuncken was appointed to deliver the early works in June.
Due to be completed in 2026, the purpose-built facility will house a range of health services currently located in, and adjacent to, the existing Allied Health Building and is an important first step to enable construction of the new seven-storey Clinical Services Building.
The new Northeast Building will include a link bridge to the existing hospital to ensure direct access to key areas, including wards, main entry and medical imaging, and is designed with opportunities for future expansion.
As part of the planning process, parking, traffic, and pedestrian safety were assessed with a new car park to be built to the northwest of the campus to offset parking spaces impacted by construction. More information about access and any parking changes will be communicated to the community over the coming weeks.
Site establishment works are now underway, including the installation of site fencing and worker sheds as well as the relocation of two demountables currently located on the Albury Campus, one being moved to the Wodonga Campus.
The next stage of the project, the verge parking proposal, is progressing with the planning application to provide more than 200 new permanent car parking spaces for staff, patients and visitors expected to be placed on public exhibition soon. The verge parking proposal will complement the broader parking strategy, which will be outlined in the planning for the multi-storey Clinical Services Building.
An agreement between Health Infrastructure and Albury City Council which grants access to the verge land adjacent to the Albury Hospital Campus on East Street and Borella Road, has enabled this parking proposal to progress.
All Albury Hospital services will continue to operate during the construction and every effort is being made to minimise impacts on patients, staff and visitors to the Hospital, while work is carried out.
Hansen Yuncken is well-known in the Albury area and has a strong commitment to engaging local trades. Local firms are encouraged to contact Hansen Yuncken.
Construction for the Northeast Building will provide a boost to the local economy, supporting jobs and creating opportunities for local trades and suppliers, who are encouraged to register their interest in being involved.
